How We Rank Products

Every ranking on HouseAssay.com follows the same published method. This page explains how we choose products, what we measure, which sources we trust, what never affects a ranking, and how we correct mistakes. If a ranking does not match this method, please tell us.

1. Our Core Principles

  • Products earn their position. A product’s rank depends only on the criteria in Section 4 and the safety rules in Section 5.
  • No payment buys a position. No brand can pay for a higher rank, a better score, or inclusion in a list.
  • Commissions do not change rankings. Affiliate commissions do not affect scores, order, or verdicts.
  • Every claim has a basis. We state a claim only when we can support it with testing, a manufacturer document, a certification, or a credible independent source.
  • We say what we do not know. If a key fact cannot be verified, we say so in the review.

2. How We Build a Ranking

  1. Define the category and the buyer. We set the scope of the list, such as “tower fans for small US bedrooms,” and the typical needs of that buyer.
  2. Select products. We choose products that are widely available in the United States and sold by reputable sellers. We do not select products because of affiliate rates.
  3. Collect primary documents. We gather manufacturer specifications, manuals, warranty terms, and parts information.
  4. Verify safety and certifications. We check certification listings and recall records before we score anything.
  5. Evaluate each product. We either test the product in use or complete a research evaluation, following Section 8.
  6. Score each product against the criteria in Section 4.
  7. Apply the safety rules in Section 5.
  8. Rank the list by total score, then apply the tie-breakers in Section 6.
  9. Review internally. A second team member checks the scores, facts, and wording before publication.
  10. Publish and maintain following Section 10.

3. Sources and Their Order of Priority

We use sources in the following order. When sources conflict, we give more weight to the source higher on this list and explain the conflict in the review.

  1. Certification and safety records: listings from certification bodies such as UL Solutions, Intertek (ETL), NSF International, and ENERGY STAR, plus recall records from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
  2. Manufacturer documents: product manuals, technical specifications, warranty statements, and parts lists published by the manufacturer.
  3. Our own testing or research: results from hands-on use or from our documented research process.
  4. Independent testing organizations and credible publications: reviews that describe their methods and conflict-of-interest policies.

We do not use customer reviews or star ratings from Amazon as a source, as a scoring input, or as a basis for any statement in a ranking. We also avoid anonymous forums and undisclosed sponsored content.

4. Scoring Criteria (100 Points)

Each product receives a score out of 100. Each criterion has a fixed weight, shown below.

CriterionPointsWhat we assess
Build quality and materials20Material thickness and type, joints and fasteners, finish, and signs of weak design
Performance for its purpose20How well the product does its main job, measured where possible, otherwise checked against specifications and independent results
Ease of use and maintenance15Setup, controls, cleaning, replacement parts, and routine upkeep
Safety and certifications15Valid certifications for the product type, safe design features, and recall history
Warranty and support10Length and coverage of the warranty, how claims work, and the availability of support
Value for features and quality10Price compared with features, quality, and the other products on the list, using the price recorded on our evaluation date
Fit for typical US homes10Size, power supply (120V), installation needs, and suitability for common US room sizes and layouts

For each criterion, we score on a five-level scale: excellent, very good, adequate, weak, and poor. Each level converts to a fixed share of that criterion’s points. The review explains the main reasons for every score that moves a product up or down.

5. Safety Rules

Safety comes before score. These rules apply to every list:

  • A product without the certification required for its type under US standards cannot rank above the middle of the list.
  • A product with an active safety recall cannot be ranked. We list it in the review with the recall details, and we explain why it is excluded.
  • A product with a documented safety problem that the manufacturer has not resolved cannot rank above the middle of the list, even if its score is high.
  • Products for children, sleep, heating, and electrical power are reviewed under stricter checks, and we state each check in the review.

We do not describe any product as “safe,” “guaranteed,” or “protects your family.” We describe the certifications and features that we verified.

6. How the Ranking Is Presented

  • Products are ordered by total score, from highest to lowest.
  • When two products have the same total, we apply tie-breakers in this order: higher safety score, higher performance score, then higher value score.
  • Each entry shows the total score, the main strengths, the main weaknesses, and the link to the full review.
  • Rankings do not carry labels that describe testing status. Each detailed review states how the product was evaluated, as described in Section 8.
  • Each list shows the date it was last updated.
  • Our lists compare products only within the same category. We do not rank a bed against a lamp, for example.

7. What Never Affects a Ranking

  • Affiliate commission rates or the commission we earn from any product
  • Payments, free products, or promises from brands, unless the review discloses them as described in Section 9
  • Amazon star ratings and customer reviews, which we do not use
  • Sales, discounts, or temporary price changes
  • Whether a product is sold through Amazon or another retailer
  • Requests from readers or brands to move a product up or down

8. Hands-On Testing and Research

Some products are used by our team over a set period under documented conditions. Others are evaluated through research because testing is not practical. Both methods follow the same criteria and safety rules.

Hands-on evaluation includes the test period and conditions, the measurements we took where measurement is possible, such as noise, time, temperature, or cleaning results, and our observations from everyday use. We include both strengths and weaknesses.

Research evaluation includes the sources we checked, the specifications we verified against manufacturer documents, the certifications we confirmed, and the independent findings we relied on. We state clearly that the product was not tested in our home.

Each detailed review states which method was used. We do not combine the two methods without explaining which parts of the review rest on each.

9. Free Products and Conflicts of Interest

  • If a manufacturer gives us a product at no cost, we say so in the review. We do not accept payment for reviews.
  • If a member of our team has a personal, financial, or professional connection to a brand or product, we disclose it in the review and remove that person from the evaluation of that product.
  • A manufacturer’s offer of a free product does not guarantee coverage or a positive result.

10. Updates, Corrections, and Re-Ranking

  • Scheduled review: Each list is reviewed at least every six months. Seasonal lists are reviewed before each season.
  • Triggered review: We re-evaluate a product when the manufacturer changes its design, specifications, or warranty, when a recall or safety report appears, or when a credible reader reports a problem we can verify.
  • Visible changes: When a score or rank changes, the review shows the update date and a short note explaining the change.
  • Corrections: If we make a factual error, we correct it and note the change at the bottom of the affected page. Significant corrections are noted at the top.
  • Discontinued products: If a product is no longer sold, we mark it as discontinued and keep the review available for reference, with a note on its status.

To report an error or suggest a re-evaluation, email [email protected] with the page URL, a description of the issue, and a source we can check.

11. Our Limits

  • We do not test every product on the market. Our lists cover the products we have selected, not every option available.
  • Our scores reflect our criteria. Another buyer may weigh the same criteria differently and reach another conclusion.
  • Our research depends on the accuracy of manufacturer documents and independent sources. When those sources are wrong, our review may also be wrong until we correct it.
  • Prices and availability change. The price we use for value scoring is the price on our evaluation date.
